About Stephen Quickel

Stephen W. Quickel has been the Editor of US Investment Report since 1985. He was portfolio manager and co-general partner of a private investment fund that replicated his newsletter portfolios from 1995 to 2002. Besides running his newsletter operations, he writes articles and columns for other publications and frequently speaks at investment forums and academic institutions.

A Pennsylvania native, Stephen Quickel earned Bachelor's degrees in English and economics from Dartmouth College in 1958 and an MBA from Dartmouth in 1959. After serving as a US Navy officer in the Pacific for two years, he began his career as an investment analyst at Mellon Bank in 1961. Stephen Quickel then joined Forbes as a reporter in 1962. Eventually rising to the position of Senior Editor, he wrote thousands of articles, including more than 50 cover stories, on all aspects of business and finance. His specialty was critiquing publicly traded companies and their managements.

Stephen Quickel started Forbes' first bureau in 1967 in Los Angeles, oversaw the expansion of its worldwide bureau network until 1977, and frequently served as the magazine's interim Managing Editor from the late 1960s onward. In 1977, Stephen Quickel became Managing Editor of Institutional Investor, a magazine for investment professionals. In 1980, he became Editor of Financial World, a magazine devoted exclusively to the needs of individual investors. In 1984, he served as start-up Editor in Chief of New York CityBusiness, a local business tabloid.

Manage Your Portfolio with the GetFolio.com Position Manager

There are quite a variety of investment newsletter services available to investors today, which achieve a decent track record. In reality, however, many newsletters have not translated well for most investors that subscribe to them. The reason? Money management. Without the proper position sizing using the right money management tool, you are only dealing with half the formula for success.

Let's face it: if there was one consistently successful investment newsletter, then the word would spread rapidly, and that one investment newsletter would have more customers than the population of China. The reality is that there has never been such a success. Why? Because in the final analysis, 8 out of 10 investors fail due to one simple reason: position sizing.

The majority of investors who subscribe to investment newsletters think that the process is as simple as "Just give me your recommendations and let me become as successful as you are". Unfortunately, as money managers know, entry points account for very little in the overall success of a portfolio. Find out why!
