Independent Investor, Inc., was
founded in by Gregory Spear in
1995. Spear tested different
investing systems and, in doing
so, invented a system, which he
called "Consensus", that
uncovers stock picks agreed upon
by the best performing
independent (non-Wall Street)
stock analysts and money
managers. In addition, Spear
designed his Performance-Weighted Rank
to find out which
stock-picking systems really
perform and which ones don't,
and then weigh their advice
accordingly. With the Consensus
System as its backbone,
Gregory Spear launched his first financial newsletter,
The Spear Report
(TSR) in 1995.
The
Spear Report monitors over 125
sources of unbiased financial
information daily. It is
delivered to paid subscribers on
a weekly basis, by mail, e-mail,
or online (a free 4 week trial
is offered at SpearReport.com).
Every issue includes a buy list
and the Performance-Weighted
Rank of each pick.
In early 2002, Independent
Investor, Inc. purchased the assets of Validea.com, a
financial information provider that, for 4 years, has
monitored the performance of over 30 different financial
media sources. Today, Independent Investor offers
publications including a
Professional Edition of TSR, a niche publication
dedicated to the security and homeland defense industry
called
Spear's Security Industry Analyst, and a short-only
letter called
Short
Spear. Independent Investor has also created a
world-class fulfillment and distribution system for
other publishers. This system, called eNP, is
used by Forbes.com to manage their entire newsletter
marketplace and ties in seamlessly to any call center or
other customer service function.

There are quite a variety of investment
newsletter services available to investors
today, which
achieve a decent track record. In reality,
however, many newsletters have not translated
well for most investors that subscribe to them.
The reason?
Money management. Without the proper position
sizing using the right money management tool,
you are only dealing with half the formula for
success.
Let's face it: if there was one consistently
successful investment newsletter, then the word
would spread rapidly, and that one investment
newsletter would have more customers than the
population of China. The reality is that there
has never been such a success. Why? Because in
the final analysis, 8 out of 10 investors fail
due to one simple reason:
position sizing.
The majority of investors who subscribe to
investment newsletters think that the process is
as simple as "Just give me your recommendations
and let me become as successful as you are".
Unfortunately, as money managers know, entry
points account for very little in the overall
success of a portfolio.
Find out why!
